Contra Costa Animal Services Newsletter

June 2020

Thanks to substantial progress being made in the fight against COVID-19, Contra Costa County residents are beginning to go back to work, shop at local retail stores and hang out with small groups of loved ones under the recently updated Health Order. This is great news as the updated order eases some of the restricted activities that were prohibited under the previous orders. You can view the latest County health order here.

We must still take precautions to ensure we remain on track in terms of flattening the curve – but know that CCAS remains here to serve you.

Because of the efforts of our amazing staff and volunteers, we have been able to adapt our model to provide Contra Costa County residents and our partners with the services they need during this difficult time. From reuniting lost pets with their owners and supporting our partners in rescue to helping families find a quarantine buddy or furvever friend through our foster and adoption programs, CCAS has been here with you the whole way. We look forward to the day when we can re-open our shelter to the public. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to let us know how we can support you.

June is License Amnesty Month

Did you know that the 4th of July is the biggest day of the year for animals to escape from their homes? Licensing your pet greatly increases the likelihood that you will be reunited, if your pet becomes lost. Contra Costa Animal Services has created a License Amnesty Program in June, where all fines and penalties will be waived when you license your pet. Take advantage of the License Amnesty Program in June, and your lost pet will be returned to you with no boarding or impound fees if it becomes lost between now and July 7th. Now that’s a reason to celebrate! For more information, visit CCASD.org

August Adoption Update

During the COVID-19 crisis, CCAS is facilitating adoptions by appointment. For more information on how to adopt pets from our shelter, visit our Adoption Policies page on our website. "My wife and I fostered August when the shelter in place started in March; he was a part of our family for 2 weeks when we got the call someone wanted to adopt him. We loved August, but after a hard discussion about adopting him ourselves we decided we weren’t quite ready to pull the trigger.
We knew we made a mistake as soon as we got back to a quiet (August-less) home after dropping him off to his new family. We missed him so much and I wished that somehow we could get him back, though I knew it wasn’t a possibility (or so I thought..).
A couple days after letting August go my brother was browsing the available dogs on CCAS website. He stumbled upon a miracle and shared the screen with me; I couldn't believe my eyes! It was August’s profile reposted that he was back at the shelter! I called immediately to see what happened and sure enough he wasn’t a fit with his new family and he was returned; unfortunately my excitement was short lived because another family was already lined up to adopt our handsome puppy.
I was told that if this adoption fell through I could pick up August at 4:00pm the same day! It was only 9:30am so I had just about the longest day of my life waiting for the call that he would be ours. At 3:45pm I still hadn’t received a call and I let slip some profanities under my breath, my wife was in the room and asked what was wrong (I had been keeping it a secret from my wife that it was a possibility we could get August back. I needed to protect her from the potential heartbreak of feeling like we lost him all over again). I thought there was no hope left, but incredibly at 3:55pm I got the call that the other adoption fell through. AUGUST IS OURS!
I told my wife I had to go for a drive (she still didn’t know), and I was at the shelter 15 minutes later. It was the happiest moment seeing him walk out of the shelter and being reunited after thinking he was gone for good. I got home and let him loose in our house to go find my wife; she was on the couch and the total surprise and joy on her face when August ran up to lick her was priceless!
We are so happy to have August as a part of our family and can’t imagine our lives without him. It was a roller coaster of a journey which makes it that much more special that we ended up with him. August is such a smart, goofy, and loving dog and has been doing great since we adopted him. He loves playing fetch and LOVES belly rubs. He has learned shake, roll over, speak, quiet, and how to walk on leash without pulling (too much). Thank you to everyone at CCAS for everything you do and making our family complete!

Why You Should License Your Pet

CCAS Blog

Did you ever wonder why you should license your pet? Well, we tried to teach our dogs to text, but without thumbs, the success rate was very low. So we found that licensing was the next best thing. Read more about the benefits to you and your pet when they are licensed.
