Kensington is a community of about 5,075 people located in the northeast section of District 1, bordered by the city of Berkeley to the south, and El Cerrito to the east and north.

Kensington has two voter-approved assessment or special districts; the Kensington Police Protection and Community Services District (KPPCSD), which provides law enforcement, recreation, and garbage services, and the Kensington Fire Protection District (KFPD),which contracts with the city of El Cerrito to provide fire protection service.
